The Commonwealth Games and the Royal Photobomb

The Commonwealth Games kicked off last week in Glasgow, and so far have produced two incredible royal snaps.

First, members of the Australian hockey team were epically photobombed by Her Majesty herself (she’s even smiling!).

Then, Prince Harry followed in his sassy grandmother’s footsteps with another photobomb for the books.

Meanwhile, not to be outdone, the future King and Queen of England were hamming it up for the cameras, too.

After 39 Years on the Throne, King Juan Carlos I Announces Abdication

SPAIN-POLITICS-ROYALS-ABDICATIONWhile most were transfixed to their television screens last night watching the fictional Game of Thrones, those on the Spanish court were preparing the announcement of the latest move of their own throne.

King Juan Carlos AbdicationAdmittedly a shock to most royal watchers, King Juan Carlos I had been swimming in more and more controversy as of late, and abdication had been a topic of more discussion.

SPAIN-POLITICS-ROYALS-ABDICATIONOn the heels of the abdication of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in January of 2013, and King Albert II of Belgium in July of 2013, some think this is becoming a trend. Going out ‘on top.’

Though many Swedes reportedly wish their King–King Carl XVI Gustaf–to do the same, it’s quite unlikely. He is still young (68), respectively, and Crown Princess Victoria still has a young, growing family.

Crown Prince Frederik is known as ‘the reluctant King,’ so I think the same is to be said for the Danish royals–not just yet.

As for Queen Elizabeth II, as much as Prince Charles may have urged his mother to relinquish the throne to him in the past, I think he has accepted the fact that she will stick to what she had said more than 65 years ago on her 21st birthday:

“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”

As pointed out by many on Twitter, every heir (aside from CP Victoria) will soon be under 12 years old, except for England, where the heir is nearly 70.

Nonetheless, an exciting day for royal news, especially soon-to-be King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia*!

Gone with the Wind(sors): A Tale of One Duchess and her Derrière

Pixelated Princess

The Daily Mail blurred Kate’s bum. I seriously think they may have a member of the design department dedicated to blurring these indiscretions.

Yet another pictures has surfaced featuring the Duchess’s bum. One bystander of the event came forward recently with the photo. This “breach of privacy” happened literally days after Kate’s infamous landing in New Zealand first thing of the tour.

And, as I mentioned long ago, this wasn’t her first “Marilyn Moment.” For pete’s sake, there are enough moments like this that some sites have compiled slideshows.

The Ingenious that is ‘Underwear’

Here’s the thing: upon Kate’s first incident–of this tour–she should have either inserted weights in her hems, or worn a slip. Or maybe, I don’t know, a pair of underwear (call me crazy)... Heck, had I been her I would have put on Spanx over a pair of underwear–and most likely I would now be a never-nude a la Tobias Fuenke.

Royal DishI think that’s the reaction many would have after such incidents.

But really, she should have had such reactions after the first time it happened on tour, in Canada. The fact that those are among the first photos that pop up when you search “Kate Middleton Canada” should be a wake up call. And the fact that when you type in “Kate Middleton Dre…” it autocorrects with “Kate Middleton Dress Blows Up,” would make you think she’d be a bit more thoughtful about her undergarments in the future.

Breach of Privacy or Breach of Wardrobe?

So was it a “breach of privacy?” Firstly: I’m against the selling of such photos that someone has snapped, accidentally or purposely… but I do think calling this incident a “breach of privacy” is a stretch. It was at a public event. She was aware of the task at hand and the appropriate thing to wear. She decided against protecting herself from such incidents and decided to take a chance.

In fact, it wasn’t even a “wardrobe malfunction.” Everything functioned correctly. Her dress was made to flutter should there be wind. Her lack of underwear (or whatever she did wear) kept her bum uncovered, and voila. It’s not rocket science.

And had it been a “wardrobe malfunction,” she is still responsible. When Janet Jackson coined the phrase, she and the CBS network faced large fines…

How to stop your Marilyn moments, Kate

When articles are dedicated to informing you of how not to flash your bum, it’s time to take a hint.

The Latest Buzz: Prince William flew among peasants; Prince Harry wants Cressida back; Where are Kate and George?

William and Kate Harry and Cressida

Prince William and economy (seating)

Prince William Flies Econony

People are praising Prince William after a US reporter tweeted a photo of the Prince flying ‘coach’ (a term Americans use for economy seating) on an American Airlines flight from Memphis to Dallas. In the words of Doge, Much brave. Nice save. Such peasant. Very relate.

At first, I was actually impressed. I may have even been among those in appreciation of the Prince’s gesture, flying among the peasants and all… until I started looking into the whole thing. Here’s the thing, it was a flight from Memphis to Dallas. A flight lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes at most. Also, he’s sitting at the very front, and boarded privately from the rest of the passengers. Ok… but such domestic flights, especially when such a short distance, don’t even have options for First Class seating… the first couple of seats are merely considered First Class. But hey, after a trip that cost UK taxpayers a reported $84,000 for security of the young royals during their jaunt to the Memphis wedding. But footed the bill for the trip–aside from the security–themselves. Had Kate been with him, I highly doubt we’d have seen them fly coach, unless, of course, for PR purposes.

Had William flown among us peasants in economy from Dallas to London, well then I’d be rather impressed. But he obviously didn’t, or we’d have that being shoved down our throats, too.

As for Prince Harry’s travel arrangements back to the UK? I think Vanity Fair said it best:

Harry, however, was nowhere to be seen on William’s flight, which means it is still possible thetwerk-happynewly single redhead returned to London on a gold-plated private jet piloted by Snoop Dogg, populated by the casts of the three most recent Real World seasons, and D.J.ed by an Avicii-Skrillex collaboration.

Prince Harry plus Cressida equals?

Cressida and Harry

Drama. Lots of drama. The amount of conflicting reports, sometimes from the same news source (hello, Daily Mail!), what are we really to believe? Was she ‘too needy’ or not? Is Prince Harry ‘bombarding‘ her with 15 texts a day? Does this have Kate’s fingerprints all over it? (Spoiler alert: probably.) Is it not over for the two? Who knows. I certainly hope so. I’m still pulling for Chelsy Davy… but that’s a story for another post, maybe later this week?

Anyway, I wanted to post this solid point from a comment I got about the whole debacle (and my saying I think Prince Harry’s camp should apologize for the ‘too needy’ accusation):

I don’t think his camp needs to apologize for calling her needy because her camp has been treading on him in the press as well. She would have been a major headache had she married in because that family of hers has been doing nothing but courting the press and leaking since he started dating her. Notice how there are only paparazzi photos of her and engagement rumors when Harry is out of the UK. She also has been represented by StuartWattsPr since they began dating. Those were her intentions from the beginning. I don’t feel sorry for her she tried to play the game and she lost.

*Slow Clap* Great point.

(I love your all’s comments! Keep them coming. I had hoped this site would start discussions!)

Royal roll call

The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Tour Australia And New Zealand - Day 1

Though I’d be lying if I said I expected to see them for months after their vacation grueling tour and all their work, I wish we could see a little bit of George in the country he will someday rule… but, seeing as how they pretty much hid him for 7 months after his christening, I’m an idiot to expect anything else. Maybe we’ll see him on his sixteenth birthday if the media continues to play into all of Prince William and Kate’s requests, maybe.

Many are speculating that the ducal couple headed straight from Australia to yet another holiday, perhaps even Switzerland to ski. (Prince William was seen in the Swiss Air lounge in Chicago.) Love, Lola has a really good post about just this topic.

I think skiing is anything but a vacation–holy workout!–but I also think the Royal Tour was anything but ‘a lot of work.’ But then again, I’ve never had to have my hair and makeup done every morning, don custom dresses, and collect dozens of bouquets from doting fans for a few hours everyday, so who am I to know the stress Kate must endure each day on behalf of the monarchy.

So much gossip to process. I don’t even really know how I feel about it all. What are your thoughts?

Royal Film Review: ‘Diana’ a film by Oliver Hirschbiegel

Diana Film Poster

Last weekend I finally got around to renting ‘Diana’ after having wanted to see it since seeing its first trailers.

Admittedly, I hadn’t researched the plot, so I was a bit disappointed upon realizing it was merely 90 plus minutes covering the alleged love story of Diana and heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan. Had I been more interested in that aspect of her life, maybe I would have viewed the film with an entirely different opinion.

Naomi Watts did not play a convincing Diana, though you could certainly tell how badly she wished to represent her as authentically as possible. I do give her credit in that regard, as well as credit to the costume department of the movie.

Interview

Diana Film Naomi Watts

I’m surprised that this was the piece of Diana’s life the filmmakers decided to cover. Though she had a tragically short life, it was full of fascinating stories from start to finish. Of course, her years as Princess of Wales, as well as immediately following, were among the most interesting. But this little sliver, her affair with the heart surgeon, is a compelling piece, but not hardly feature-film worthy.

With the film’s bad reviews (Rotten Tomatoes, Roger Ebert), outright disapproval from the heart surgeon depicted, and Naomi Watts’ comparison of it to ‘a sinking ship,’ I suppose I shouldn’t have been so surprised to find the whole thing to be a complete flop.

Royal Rewind: Week of April 25, 2014

William and George April 25, 2014

This week in Royal news…

The Spanish Royals attended Easter Mass in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Infanta Leonor and Sophie looked darling, as usual.

Prince George was absolutely precious, though a bit unimpressed, on Easter Sunday at the Taronga Zoo.

The British Royals attended Easter service at Windsor Palace with the Queen.

A new portrait was unveiled of Queen Elizabeth II in honor of her 88th birthday.

The Ducal family was photographed on their day of rest and the BRF PR was not happy. But we got this .gif of Kate clicking her heels, which I like to think is her way of ‘sticking it to the haters.’

William and Kate went to Uluru to recreate visit the breathtaking views of the Australian outback… awkwardness was aplenty as the couple was photographed with Will saying to Kate, ““So what shall we talk about?” They then ‘glamped.’

The Queen and Prince Consort of Denmark had paid a State visit to China.

The Duchess of Cornwall’s younger brother passed away after a freak accident in New York.

William and Kate visited Adelaide and tried DJing. Again, awkwardness ensued.

The Swedish Royal Family released photos of baby Princess Leonore with her cousin, Princess Estelle. If you listen closely, you can hear the ‘awwwws’ around the world. (Or, at least mine.)

Kate wore an American designer dress for formal event in Canberra.

William and Kate attended ‘previously unscheduled’ memorial service, visited tomb of the Unknown Soldier, planted tree, and bid farewell to Australia, ending tour officially.

Around the web…

First, GEORGE. The best of, because hello!

And The Official Ranking of his facial expressions. He is killing it.

Kate went from low, low, to neck high… oh girl, pick a happy medium!

Tour Question #8320: Where were the jewels?

US Weekly photoshopped their Prince George cover for God knows why.

Cressida allegedly ‘spooked’ by royal life after talking with Kate… and I’d just like to let it be known, Harry, I volunteer to take on the painstaking role of being your Princess. No matter how many tiaras and jewels I may be forced to wear, long hemlines be damned!

The Cambridges release new family portrait

The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Release Family Photograph Ahead Of Tour To Australia & New Zealand

By George! How he has grown

A new portrait was released this week of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and sweet Prince George (and pup Lupo, too!) just in time for Mother’s Day (in the United Kindgom). I’m personally a bit disappointed that we only see the side of Prince George’s cherub-like face, but he sure looks cute from the side. He is reported to have ‘Middleton eyes‘ and is wearing a personalized sweater from grandpa Prince Charles.

Awkward family photo

To be honest, at first I wasn’t even sure if this photo was real. It reminded me a lot of the spoof photos artist Alison Jackson often does.

It’s a bit washed out, and I was surprised they would pick such a photo that 1. has George looking the wrong direction, and 2. makes Kate look as though she is gritting her teeth in disdain. It’s still a sweet photo, I just wouldn’t have picked it myself.

Kate Middleton Review wrote a blog post about the photo and touched on a lot of things I had previously overlooked. Like the fact it’s incredibly staged and appears to have a feeling of gloom about it.

Is it a coincidence that we are viewing them through the window?  It’s not an invitation into their intimate family moment—as other royal baby pictorials have been—it’s giving a peek into their family, but still blocking the viewer out.  There is literally a wall there between the viewer and the Cambridges.  It’s like they’re saying, “We’re in here, you are out there and you don’t get to come in.”  It’s a reflection of William’s attitude toward the press and public.

They go onto point out how often the press was granted family photos of the Prince and Princess of Wales when Prince William himself was a child.

You know what’s a happy family baby photo?  This one.  And this one.  And this one.  And this one.  Oh, and this one, too.  And those are just the top Google searches.  There are plenty more.  Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting that from George.

It makes me particularly uneasy seeing as how unhappy they look in such a staged, calculated photo.

Here’s to hoping their upcoming tour proves the couple to be a bit more, shall we say, happy to be in one another’s company.

Royals gone Vogue.

Royal Vogue Covers

There’s nothing quite like the sitting down with a glossy magazine and getting lost in its pages… add a royal to the mix and it’s a match made in Heaven.

I had intended to include historical facts regarding Vogue and its featuring of Royals in this post, however, after much research, I was unable to find any solid information. So instead of throwing out the post altogether, I figured posts with gorgeous pictures are better than nothing. (If you have any insight please do share! I’d love to include these bits of information!)

Majesties meet magazines

While many Royals have done photo shoots specific for Vogue, many have simply had their photo from other occasions featured on the cover. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Princess Diana, and Princess Anne are among those who have done feature shoots for the magazines. Many others may have, as well, however my research came up short, unfortunately.

What about the Duchess?

While Princess Diana appeared on British Vogue four times, it’s interesting we haven’t yet seen Kate on its cover. There is lots of speculation as to why this may be, most reasons pointing to the Queen’s disapproval.

Anna Wintour’s miss

This past week the latest US Vogue cover was revealed. Not only did it feature Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, it had the hashtag: #WORLDSMOSTTALKEDABOUTCOUPLE as a headline.

We have to agree with our friends at WWKD on this one:

WWKD Tweet

I’d say after this gaffe, Anna Wintour lost her chance of having Kate on her cover, along with millions of subscriptions…

So Royals and magazine covers… what do you think?
